Safe Room? Concrete Block help?

Will have to stick it out in present residence, in the suburbs. Have been thinking about making a saferoom. Have an unfinished basement with one side 12'x25', perfect rectangle. All walls are poured concrete. Am thinking of putting up a block wall to make it look like there is nothing back behind it. Would have to 'plaster' the block with morter and paint to match other poured walls. Adjacent to it is where the washer & dryer is located. Was planing on making a little room there for laundry room. In it would have the door to the back room, would appear to just be a closet in a laundry room. Another idea would be to just make like regular stud wall. In it somewhere make a large book shelf, that happens to swing open, but could be 'locked' from inside so as not to move. If making with blocks, should holes be drilled in floor and sides to 'secure' new blocks to both floor and existing wall? Will not let me upload picture, sure would help for a visual.

Good plan but once you're in the room you are trapped.

Anyone who really wants in can cut a hole in the floor above the room.

However it would be good protection for wife/kids until help can be summoned.

Stock room with gas masks, firearms, communications to outside.

Re: Safe Room? Concrete Block help?

I did a room in my current house just like what your talking..

I took 8" Haydite bocks (fireproof) and drilled rebar into the floor for every cell and filled every cell with rebar and concrete

I put in a fire rated steel door that opens to the inside used block ties and poured the door jambs full of high strength grout, i put a regular handle on the door and three dead bolts opposite the hinges and a bar mechanism on the inside (opening the door to the inside allows you to open the door with debris in frount of the door and also keeps the hinges on the inside of the room for security)

I put steel deck on the ceiling and poured a 6" reinforced concrete ceiling (to support in case of a collapse of the structure above and to protect against fire etc)(had to pump in the ceiling concrete i have 10' basement existing ceilings so i ended up with a 8' ceiling in the secure room with some storage above)

I wanted fireproof...safe from storms...safe from intruders...i wanted something that would take a intruder at least a hour to get thru with some real tools. i installed remote ventalation and appropriate alarms and we keep a spare cell phone in the room along with many guns and a small inverter system to power lights and ventalation if needed.. etc.

I did all of this on a existing area, the main hastle was pumping the concrete roof/ceiling in and finishing it. The rest really wasnt to tough

I built it similar to Tn ANdys Root celler he posted a thread on several months back if you want to look it up as it includes pictures etc.

i couldnt find another thread like the one i needed so i thought maybe i'd slightly highjack this old thread......

i have a basement partially finished. the part thats unfinished is behind the finished walls and i can access the area for storage. i have these foundation poles scattered around and thought it would be nice to be able to hang stuff on the poles.

how would i do that?>
the poles seem to be kinda sturdy and thick and i was thinking of some sort of clamp but then i would need a large bolt hanging out of the clamp so i can use it as a hanger.

anyone know of a device made specifically for this?

Was just over on the Glocktalk frum reading a post a little simmilar to this about building a Large concrete GunSafe/Saferoom...

Anyone thought about putting an exteranl Airvent and maybe an escape route???

For ex, you run in there and the house is on fire or you think whoever made you run in there might be close to breaching the room, you would bail out the back or where ever the exit goes...

I wanted to build a bookcase or something in our bedroom that could reveal a door/ladder to get down into the basement/Saferoom/Gunsafe...

Just some thoughts...

BTW, any pics of these type rooms???
